Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not. - Thomas H. Huxley (1825 - 1895)

One of the ways to speed up your website is to use correct and efficient HTML codes and optimized images.

Ensure you use valid codes when you create your webpages. The more bugs your code consists of, the longer a browser needs to render it. Secondly, use less objects. Using too many images, flash and javascript on a website will drastically slow it down. If images are absolutely required, first optimize them using a program like Photoshop (reduce Image Size and Save for Web & Devices to reduce storage).

Make sure your code do not reference a non-existent file, as the server will need a lot of time to notice that and answer with a 404 "Not Found" error. In some cases, the server may redirect to an error page and the browser receives a complete new page each time the server can't find the file.

Imagine just one page with an image that is used at a dozen places in the layout and is not present. This can slow down the delivery to up to half a minute!

This official markup validator from w3.org checks the markup validity  of Web documents in HTML, XHTML, SMIL, MathML, etc.
